Managing NAT Gateways (BETA)
View NAT Gateway details and assigned Linodes
- Log in to Cloud Manager and navigate to NAT Gateways in the main navigation menu.
- Select the label of the NAT Gateway you want to view.
- On the details page, review the top section for high-level information:
- Summary: Displays the Region, Creation date, NAT Gateway ID, Allocation Type (Manual or Autoscaling), Ports per Linode, and overall gateway Capacity. Capacity helps you monitor when to manually add IP addresses.
- VPC: Shows the attached VPC and subnet.
- In the Public IP Addresses & Assigned Linodes section, click the down arrow (v) next to a public IP address to expand its row and view the specific Linodes currently using portsets on that IP.
Edit a NAT Gateway label
- On the details page for the target NAT Gateway, click Edit in the top-right corner.
- In the panel, update the NAT label field.
The region, portset size, and allocation type can't be changed after creation. - Save your changes.
Manage IPs on a NAT Gateway (manual scaling only)
Manual scalingThe Manage IPs option is only available for NAT Gateways configured with reserved IPs which are manually added and unassigned. Autoscaled NAT Gateways manage public IP allocations automatically.
Before you start
- Your NAT Gateway must be configured with manual scaling.
- To add IP addresses, you must have unassigned, reserved public IPv4 addresses available in your account within the same region as the NAT Gateway.
Add or unassign reserved IPs
- On the details page for the target NAT Gateway, locate the Public IP Addresses & Assigned Linodes section. Click Manage IPs in the top-right corner of the section.
The Manage Reserved IPs panel opens on the right side of the screen.- Assign additional reserved IPs. Click + Add more reserved IPs to expand the list of available addresses. Check the box next to one or more available reserved IPv4 addresses you want to assign to the NAT Gateway. Click Add IP addresses.
- Unassign reserved IPs. Locate the IP address you want to remove in the top table of assigned Reserved IPs. Click Unassign next to the target IP address. The Unassign option is only available if the IP address's current Capacity is
0 / X(no Linode interfaces in the subnet are actively using portsets on that IP address).
- When you are finished managing IP assignments, click Close.
Unassign a reserved IP from the details table
In addition to using the Manage IPs panel, you can unassign a reserved IPv4 address directly from the NAT Gateway details page:
- On the details page for your target NAT Gateway, locate the Public IP Addresses & Assigned Linodes section.
- Find the row for the public IP address you want to remove.
- Click the action menu (...) in the row.
- Select Unassign. The Unassign option is only available if the IP address's current Capacity is
0 / X(no Linode interfaces in the subnet are actively using portsets on that IP address). If the Unassign option is disabled, delete the Linode or remove it from the subnet first.
Delete a NAT Gateway
Before you start
A NAT Gateway can't be deleted if it is still attached to an active VPC subnet. Ensure you detach the subnet first if necessary.
- Navigate to the details page for the target NAT Gateway.
- Click Delete in the top-right corner.
- In the confirmation dialog, confirm that the NAT Gateway is no longer required and confirm the deletion.
Detach a NAT Gateway from a subnet
Impact of detaching a NAT Gateway from a subnetUnassigning a NAT Gateway disables internet access for all Linodes in that subnet. Any active external network connections will be dropped immediately, and no new outbound connections can be established until a new egress route is configured.
If the detached NAT Gateway uses Autoscaling, detaching it from the subnet causes the gateway to release its active load and scale down to zero public IP addresses. Reserved IPs are returned to your account and can be re-assigned.
The system automatically frees up all portsets allocated to interfaces in that subnet. Once detached, the NAT Gateway's status will display None under the VPC section, allowing it to be deleted or reassigned to a different subnet.
- Navigate to VPCs in the main navigation menu.
- Select the VPC that contains the subnet attached to your NAT Gateway.
- Locate the target subnet in the subnets list.
- Click the Action menu (...) next to the subnet row (or click Edit).
- In the NAT Gateway field, update the selection to None (or clear the NAT Gateway assignment).
- Save your changes to update the subnet.
