Akamai Cloud Pulse (Beta)

Akamai Cloud Pulse is an observability solution that delivers real-time insights into the performance, availability, and reliability of your cloud entities and infrastructure. These insights can help you to monitor your services, respond quickly to any issues that arise, and plan for future needs. Akamai Cloud Pulse includes dedicated components for Metrics and Alerts:

Metrics:

  • Collects and stores metrics for Akamai Cloud services.
  • Provides programmatic access to metrics through the APIs
  • Enables visualization and analysis of key metrics via dashboards

Alerts:

  • Notifies users of critical system events via system alerts
  • Supports the creation and management of custom user alerts based on user-defined evaluation criteria
  • Supports email as the notification channel

Metrics and Alerts are currently available for Databases. Support for additional Akamai Cloud services is planned for future releases.

Key concepts and terms

The following terms are defined based on their usage within the Akamai Cloud Pulse context.

  • Alert. An alert is a configured rule that continuously monitors metrics or events and triggers actions when specified conditions are met.
  • Dashboard. A collection of widgets that provide visual insight into metrics data over time.
  • Dimension. Descriptive attributes or categories that give context to the data, and can be used for dimensional filtering.
  • Entity. The primary object or "resource" for which metrics data is being collected, for example, a database cluster or a virtual machine.
  • Metric. A quantifiable indicator of health, behavior, or performance.
  • Service. An Akamai Cloud service, for example, Databases or Linodes.
  • System alert. A preconfigured alert that notifies users of a critical event impacting one or more of their entities.
  • User alert. An user-defined alert that evaluates a metric against user-defined thresholds.
  • Widget. A dashboard component that displays metric data over time in graph and table format.

System Limits

Keep the following limits in mind when working with metrics and alerts:

Metrics:

  • Entities: A maximum of 10 entities can be selected at a time for data visualization on a dashboard.
  • Dashboard time range: A maximum of 31 days of data can be queried at a time.

Alerts:

  • Number of Metrics per Alert: You can include up to five metrics in an alert definition.
  • Dimension Filters per Alert: You can include up to five optional dimensional filters in an alert definition.
  • Number of Entities per Alert: You can assign up to 100 entities to an alert.
  • Number of user alerts: Each account can create up to 100 user alerts.
  • Notification channels per Alert: Each alert can be associated with a maximum of 5 notification channels.
