DHCP and host-level traffic reference

Certain platform-level network services operate directly on the underlying network interface of your compute instance. Because these services are handled before traffic reaches the Cloud Firewall layer, they can't be blocked using Cloud Firewall rules.

Linode Cloud Firewall behavior

Cloud Firewalls don't block DHCP traffic between Linodes and compute hosts. They also don't block metadata API access or router advertisements.

You don't need to add Cloud Firewall rules to allow DHCP traffic.

Local firewalls

If you use a local firewall on your Linode (such as ufw), ensure it is configured to allow DHCP traffic (UDP ports 67/68) so your instance can request and renew its IPv4 address.
