Manage and assign reserved IPs

View reserved IPs

To view a list of reserved IPs on your account, log in to Cloud Manager and select Reserved IPs from the navigation menu.

Each reserved IP is listed along with its assigned resource (Linode or NodeBalancer), the region it is located within, and any tags that are added.

You can also identify reserved IPs by the Reserved badge shown on the resource details page.

Reserve an IP address

You can reserve individual public IPv4 addresses in the following ways:

  • Independently, for future assignment.
  • When deploying a new Linode or NodeBalancer.
  • By converting an assigned IP that is already in use into a reserved one.
🚧

Selecting a target region for reserved IPs

During this process, you must define the target region where the IP will live. Because reserved IPs are bound to a specific datacenter's network infrastructure, the address can't be moved to a different region later. Ensure your intended Linodes or NodeBalancers reside in this same region.

Review the Reserve an IP guide for complete instructions.

Assign a reserved IPv4 address

After you reserve the IP, you can assign it during a new resource creation. The reserved IPs and its resource must be in the same region. See detailed guides for more information.

Reserved IPs can also be assigned and shared between Linodes using the IP sharing feature. For more information, see Configure IP Sharing.

Edit reserved IP tags

  1. Navigate to the Reserved IPs page in Cloud Manager and locate the IP you wish to edit.
  2. Click on the ... actions menu and select Edit.
  3. From the Edit Reserved IP drawer, update the tags.
  4. Click Save for the changes to take effect.

Unreserve an IP address

Permanently remove the reserved IP address from your account and stop all associated charges. Before unreserving an IP, consider the following:

  • If the reserved IP is not assigned to any resource, the IP is immediately released from your account. Unreserving this IP removes it from your reserved list and makes it unavailable to assign. This action can't be undone.
  • If the reserved IP is assigned to a resource, the IP converts into an ephemeral IP. Unreserving here doesn't mean the IP address is unassigned from the resource, but it will be released and recycled if you delete this resource.
  • For reserved IPs that are in use by NAT Gateway and assigned to a resource, you need to first unassign the IP and then remove it from your reserved IPs.
  1. Navigate to the Reserved IPs page in Cloud Manager and locate the IP you wish to unreserve.
  2. Click on the ... actions menu and select Unreserve.

  3. A pop-up confirmation dialog appears. Click the Unreserve button to permanently remove the IP address from your reserved list.

Deleting a resource that uses a reserved IP

After you delete a resource (Linode or NodeBalancer), the reserved IP address that was assigned to the resource remains on your account in an unassigned state, preserving the address for future use in that same region. Reserved IP fees remain active as long as the address is held on your account, regardless of its assignment status. Conversely, unreserved (ephemeral) IP addresses are released after a resource deletion and can't be recovered.
