Add a hostname with a custom certificate

Configure a hostname with a custom certificate you obtain from the Certificate Authority (CA).

Some steps may slightly vary depending on the Property Manager release you're using, either General Availability (GA) or Limited Availability (LA). The procedures cover two variants of the custom hostnames setup.

Before you begin

You need to prepare your edge certificate before you can start this process.

General Availability

Perform these steps to set up a property hostname using a custom certificate you created with โ€‹Akamaiโ€‹'s Certificate Provisioning System (CPS) or one you set up with a third-party service.

๐Ÿ“˜

Do you have access to "Secure by default?"

If you do, but you still need to use a custom certificate, the process is slightly different. See the Limited Availability instructions.

  1. In the Property Hostnames content panel, click Add.

  2. In the Add Hostname(s) field, enter the property hostnames you want to use, and click Next. The names don't need to contain https://, just the domain. Only alphanumeric (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and hyphen (-) characters are supported, with a length 4-60 characters. This value can't begin or end with a hyphen.

    • Have you already generated the certificate in โ€‹Akamaiโ€‹ Certificate Provisioning System (CPS)? You need to input the domain that matches what you've set up in that certificate as either the Common Name (CN) or a SAN (Subject Alternate Name).

    • Are you providing a third-party custom certificate? If so, you need to enter the exact domain associated with the certificate you've provided to your โ€‹Akamaiโ€‹ account team.

  3. Select the appropriate IP version, based on what your application or site can support, and click Next.

  4. Select the certificate that you set up for your domain name.

  5. If applicable, specify the desired Mapping Solution. If none of the following applies to you, go to the next step.

๐Ÿ“˜

You can only select one Mapping Solutionโ€”you can enable Edge IP Binding, or select a use case, but not both.

  1. Review the edge hostnames.

    • Do you want to use the auto-generated edge hostname? This is what Property Manager automatically sets for the association. If this suits your needs, click Submit.

    • Do you want to modify the edge hostname? If so, click the pencil icon .

      • Create. With this option selected, you can define a fully custom edge hostname, select a different domain, and change the IP version, if desired.

      • Select existing. Select this option if you want to associate your property hostname with an existing edge hostname.

      • Custom. Select this option to manually input a CNAME target to be used in the association. Contact your account representative for further details on the proper use of this field, and whether it applies to your environment configuration.

  2. Once you complete selecting your hostname options, click Update. Review what's set and click Submit.

  3. Review the information in the Success window and apply its instructions as required.

Limited Availability

Use this scenario if you have access to the Default Certificate (secure by default) functionality, but you need to use a custom certificate that you set up with โ€‹Akamaiโ€‹'s Certificate Provisioning System (CPS) or you have a third-party secure certificate.

  1. In the Property Hostnames content panel, click Add.

  2. In the Add Hostname(s) field, enter the property hostnames you want to use and click Next. The names don't need to contain https://, just the domain. Only alphanumeric (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and hyphen (-) characters are supported, with a length of 4-60 characters. This value can't begin or end with a hyphen.

  3. If you've already generated a certificate outside of this process and want to use it, [ick from these two options. If not, skip to the next step.

    • I have a certificate in CPS. Enter the domain that matches what you've set up in that certificate as either the Common Name (CN) or a SAN (Subject Alternate Name).

    • I have a third-party custom certificate Enter the exact domain associated with the certificate you've provided to your โ€‹Akamaiโ€‹ account team.

  4. Select the appropriate IP version, based on what your application or site can support, and click Next.

  5. Switch off the Automatically request certificates toggle.

  6. Select the custom certificate you previously created and associated with your domain name.

๐Ÿ“˜

You can create custom certificates at this point, but you'll have to wait for the certificate to provision (3-6 hours, depending on the level of security) and also perform this hostname configuration process again.

  1. If applicable, specify the desired Mapping Solution. If none of the following applies to you, go to the next step.
