Remote desktop protocol (RDP) applications

Remote desktop is a program or an operating system feature that allows a user to connect to a computer in another location, see that computer's desktop and interact with it as if it were local. Remote desktop protocol (RDP) allows a computer's desktop environment to run remotely on one system, usually a personal computer, while displaying on a separate client device.

RDP can be run to:

  • Access a workplace computer from home or when traveling.

  • Access a home computer from other locations.

  • Fix a computer problem.

  • Perform administrative tasks.

  • Demonstrate a process or a software application.

In Enterprise Application Access (EAA) you can expose and publish a remote desktop or a single desktop application as an Enterprise Application Access application. This feature allows you to limit the user's lateral movement ability on the remote desktop by restricting access to other desktop applications.

Enterprise Application Access allows you to create a remote desktop application and enable specific operations in the remote environment:

  • Initial Program. You can specify the program that initializes or starts when the user logs in to the remote environment.

  • RemoteApp. You can specify the RemoteApp program that the user can access. You can also specify additional arguments and directory details for the RemoteApp.

  • Copy and Paste. The ability to copy and paste content to and from the remote desktop. Depending on the browser, users may need to use keyboard shortcuts for these operations or they have to use the copy and paste options in the context menu.

  • Audio. If audio is enabled for the remote desktop, users can play audio on their remote desktop environment.

  • Printing. If enabled, users can print content from their remote desktop server. Enterprise Application Access creates a postscript printer that users select when printing content. This printer converts the content to a PDF that users print from their local computer.

  • File Sharing. If enabled, users can upload and download files to and from the remote desktop.

A remote desktop icon allow users to Configure RDP client display settings.
