​Akamai MFA​ mobile app is the key element of the MFA solution, turning the user's mobile device into an authenticator that supports various secondary factors such as the phish-proof phone security key, push notification, or text message.
During the enrollment process, users need to install the app on their mobile device and use it to activate the device.

Users can get the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This is a convenient channel that lets users download regular updates with automatic notifications.
However, as users in mainland China may not be able to access the Google Play Store, ​Akamai​ provides an additional distribution channel for Android users in mainland China. Administrators need to download the app from the ​Akamai​ Content Delivery Network (CDN) and share the link to the APK file with Android users.

iOS users can access and download the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app for their iOS devices from the Apple App Store.

To enable the ​Akamai MFA​ solution for users, follow these steps:

1. Download the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app from the ​Akamai​ CDN.

2. Customize your enrollment email. You can customize the layout of the email and personalize the email content.

3. In the email text, include these two links:

   • The enrollment link that the user needs to open on their desktop device. This link leads the user to the authentication prompt where they can enroll their devices.
   • The other link lets users download the APK file.
     Users need to open this link in their personal browser outside of the device’s MDM work profile. This prevents the Android MDM (Mobile Device Management) from rejecting the app installation.

4. Send the enrollment email to users to invite them to enroll in the service.

The following is the process that the users in mainland China need to follow to download and install the Akamai MFA mobile app on their trusted devices.

Before you begin

Allow unknown sources in your mobile device’s settings. With this setting enabled, you can download apps in the APK format from third-party websites.
Depending on your Android device this configuration may vary. For example:

• For Huawei and Honor devices, go to Settings > Security & privacy > More settings >Install apps from external sources, and toggle on Allow app installs.
• For OnePlus devices, go to Settings > Apps & notification > Special app access, and select Install unknown apps.
• For Oppo devices, go to Settings > Additional Settings > Device & Privacy > Apps Installed from Unknown Sources, and toggle on your browser.
• For Xiaomi devices, go to Settings > System & Device > Additional settings > Privacy, and toggle on Unknown sources.

If you’re enrolling another mobile phone brand, go to Settings and use the search action or check corresponding support pages to learn how to enable unknown sources.

Download the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app.

1. In your inbox, open the enrollment email that you received from your IT department.
   The enrollment email includes these links:

   • The first link redirects you to the ​Akamai MFA​ authentication prompt. Open this link on your desktop device and follow the on-screen instructions to enroll. See Self-enroll to learn how to enroll different authentication devices.

   • The other link lets you install the mobile app on your authentication device.
     Open this link in your personal browser outside of the device’s MDM work profile. This prevents the Android MDM (Mobile Device Management) from rejecting the app installation.

2. On your mobile device, copy the MFA mobile app link and paste it into your personal browser outside of the device’s MDM work profile. The Android MDM profile on your device may reject the app installation.

   The MFA APK file size is around 30Mb. If your mobile data use is metered, consider connecting to Wi-Fi before downloading the app.

3. In This type of file can harm your device. Do you want to keep MFA APK anyway?, tap Yes.
   This downloads the APK file to your mobile device.

4. Click the downloaded APK file to install it.

5. In Do you want to install this application? It does not require any special access, tap Install.
   This starts the installation. When the installation completes, you can see the App installed confirmation on your mobile device.

6. Tap Open to enter the app.
   You’ve just installed the ​Akamai Technologies, Inc.​ mobile app.

Now you can go ahead and enroll your authentication device.

7. Go back to the email you received from the IT department and click the enrollment link.
   This opens the ​Akamai MFA​ authentication prompt where you can:
   Self-enroll your smartphone
   Self-enroll your security key
   Self-enroll your phone
   Self-enroll your tablet or iPad
   Self-enroll your third-party OTP device

Update the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app

The ​Akamai MFA​ app periodically checks for updates and notifies you when a new APK is available for download.
When you unlock your phone, the notification appears allowing you to download pending changes.

To update, follow these steps:

1. Tap the notification to open it.
   You’re prompted to select your preferred browser.

2. In This type of file can harm your device. Do you want to keep ​Akamai MFA​ APK anyway?, tap Yes.
   This downloads the APK file to your mobile device.

3. Click the downloaded APK file to install it.

4. In Do you want to install an update to this existing application? Your existing data will not be lost. It does not require any special access., tap Install.
   This starts the installation.

   When the installation completes, you can see the App installed confirmation on your mobile device.

5. Tap Open to enter the app.
   You’ve just updated the ​Akamai MFA​ mobile app.

You can also manually check if an update is available.

6. To check manually for the latest updates, do the following:
   1. In the mobile app Settings go to App updates and tap Check.
      This checks for any pending updates. Depending on the mobile app status, the following actions are available:
   • If the app is up to date, you can see a message confirming that you’re using the latest available version.
   • If there are updates available, the Check button changes to Download. Click Download to get the latest version of the APK file on your mobile device and follow the on-screen instructions.
