Test your policy on staging

After you have finished creating or editing policy and have saved it to staging, you can test it on the staging network using your actual images and videos.

Before you begin

To increase the likelihood of successful testing:

  • Use the Image Policy Editor preview pane to preview any transformations included in your unsaved policy. You may be able to detect potential issues that will save you frustration later on.

Best practices

The following best practices will help you to get the most out of your testing sessions before pushing new or edited policies to production.

  • Make sure that the images and videos you are using for testing fall under the match criteria in your Image and Video Manager rule.

  • Test in a variety of browsers.

  • If using Scale for Mobile, test on many different devices with different screen sizes and resolutions.

  • If a policy applies multiple transformations, consider building up and testing the policy a few transformations at a time.

  • If you will be using more than one policy, save and test your policies one at a time.

  • If you are using custom policies, start with the simplest use case.

  • Review the Image Manager Traffic Reports for insights into the effectiveness of your Image and Video Manager configuration.

  • Use Piez to validate the impact of your policies on your images and videos. Piez is a Google Chrome extension that provides summary information and optimization details for your images and short-form videos.

🚧

Videos that exceed maximum duration or size

Image and Video Manager will not attempt to optimize videos over 5 minutes in duration, 256 MB in size, or 3.7 M in pixel area (1920x1920). If a video policy is failing during testing, this may be why.
