Enable outbound zone transfers

You can transfer zone data from Akamai Edge DNS servers to your external name servers. This is useful if your organization uses multiple service providers for DNS and you need to maintain a master zone file with zone data. Authoritative zone transfers (AXFR) are used to transfer zone data to your external name servers.

Complete this procedure to enable outbound zone transfers for an existing zone. To add a new primary or secondary DNS zone, see Add a primary DNS zone or Add a secondary DNS zone.

To enable outbound zone transfers:

  1. Go to > DNS SOLUTIONS > Edge DNS. The Zone list page opens.
  2. To narrow the list of zones, see Display the zone list.
  3. Click the name of the zone where you want to enable outbound zone transfer. Expand the Zone settings section.
  4. Select Enable outbound zone transfer.
  5. In the Notification targets field, enter the IP addresses of the external name servers that are contacted when new zone data is available.
  6. In the Access control list field, enter the IP addresses that are used to perform the transfer from Edge DNS servers to your external name servers.

    📘

IP addresses provided in the Notification targets field are automatically included in the access control list. You can omit them from your configuration.

  7. In the TSIG key menu, select a key or select Create new TSIG key. If you select Create new TSIG key, complete these steps:
    1. In the Key name field, enter a name for the key.
    2. In the Algorithm menu, select an algorithm.
    3. In the Secret field, enter a secret string in Base64 format.

      📘

If you select a new key, you can also manage your keys from this area of the user interface. For example, you can remove a key or view the zones where the selected key is used.

  8. Click Add to change list.

Next step:

Review and submit the change list to propagate your changes.
