Manage active zones

After you create a zone, it displays on the Zone list page. This section describes how to perform common zone management tasks.

Display the zone list

You can narrow the list of zones that display on the Zone list page by using the Filter zone list section categories that appear directly below the section title.

  1. Log in to Control Center.

  2. Go to > DNS SOLUTIONS > Edge DNS. The Zone list page opens.

  3. Expand the Filter zone list section to view the filter categories.

    The following categories appear:

    • Activation. Activation status: Active, Pending approval, New, Pending, Error
    • Type. Zone type: Primary, Secondary, Alias
    • DNSSEC. DNSSEC status: Valid, Warning, Error
    • Zone transfer. Transfer status for secondary zones: Success, Pending, Failure
    • Subzone Grants. Subzone grants enablement: Enabled, Disabled
  4. For each category, select one or more attributes to use to filter the zone list. As you select filter criteria, the zone list display is dynamically updated.

Manage zones

Complete the next procedure to manage zones.

  1. Display the zone list.

  2. In the zones table, locate the zone or zones that you want to manage.

  3. To manage a single zone, use either the Actions menu associated with the zone, or the Select zones action menu. To manage multiple zones by performing a bulk edit, use the Select zones action menu.

    👍

The Select zones action menu appears above the zones table after you select one or more zones.

The following actions may be available on a zone's Actions menu:

The next actions may be available on the Select zones action menu:

View/edit zone details

To edit a zone's settings and record sets, complete the next procedure.

  1. Display the zone list.

  2. In the zones table, complete one of these steps:

    • Double click the zone name.
    • From the zone's Actions menu, click Edit.
    • Select the checkbox to the left of the zone name and from the Select zones action menu on the toolbar, click Edit.

    The Edit zone page opens.

  3. Edit the zone's settings and record sets as desired. When you are done, click Add to change list.

  4. Review and submit the change list. The Zone Transfer Agents (ZTAs) will propagate the changes.

Edit multiple secondary zones

Editing secondary zones provides the option to change the master name servers and comment properties for multiple secondary zones at the same time. Edits to both fields are required. For all selected zones, this function bypasses the change list mechanism and directly updates the zones' settings.

  1. Display the zone list.

  2. In the zone table, select the checkbox next to one or more secondary zones that you want to edit.

The following information and actions for the selected zones appear above the zone list:

    • Selected zones: [number]. Displays the number of zones selected in the zones table.
    • Clear selections button. Clears the selected zones.
    • Select zones action menu. Includes the following actions:
  3. From the Select zones action menu, click Edit. The Edit secondary zones dialog opens.

  4. To add new customer name servers, in the New customer master name servers field, enter one or more IP addresses separated by commas, white-spaces, or semi-colons. These name servers will replace the current master name servers.

The information you enter displays in the New master name servers column next to the current master name servers.

  5. In the New comments: field, enter comments to describe the changes.

Valid entries in steps 4 and in the New comments field enable the Save changes & activate selected zones button.

  6. Click Save changes & activate selected zones to submit your changes. The selected zones are updated.

Convert zone type

You can convert one or more zone types between primary, secondary, and alias.

For a zone to be eligible for conversion, its Activation state must be Active or Error, and the Current zone type must be different than the new selected zone type. TLD zones cannot be converted.

Complete the next procedure to convert one or more zone types.

  1. Display the zone list.

  2. On the Zone list page, in the zones table, select one or more zones whose type you want to change. Then, from the Select zones action menu, select Change zone type.

The Change zone type dialog opens to the Zones to change tab, which lists the selected zones whose type is eligible for conversion. If any of the selected zones are ineligible, these are listed on the Zones ineligible tab.

  3. On the top toolbar, from the Change zone type to menu, select the new zone type.

After you select a new type, the Change listed zones to type: [zone type] panel expands to include the fields to fill in. Fields that appear in the panel vary depending on the new zone type you chose, as summarized in the next table.

    New zone typeFields to complete

    Primary

    • Comment . Enter a descriptive comment.

    Secondary

    • Customer master name servers. Enter one or more name servers, separated by white space, a comma, or a semicolon.

    • TSIG key. Optional. The TSIG key is used to provide secure DNS messaging, typically for zone transfers and dynamic updates. Enabling DNSSEC via Sign and Serve requires that the TSIG key is fully configured for this zone.

Select an existing TSIG key or create a new one. To clear the field content, click Cancel TSIG Editing.

    • Comment. Enter a descriptive comment.

    Alias

    • Aliased zone name. Specify the target zone name for the record sets to use as the source when creating the alias zone.

    • Comment. Enter a descriptive comment.

  4. Click Change zone type.

The Bulk zone type convert status page opens providing conversion status for each zone that you selected to convert.

Force a secondary zone transfer

When you create a secondary DNS zone, you maintain an authoritative version of your records and enable zone-file transfers to Akamai.

There may be times when you need to expeditiously facilitate propagation of zone-file transfers. To force a transfer, the Transfer zone now button is available in the Edge DNS UI.

Complete the next procedure to force a secondary zone transfer.

  1. Display the zone list.

  2. On the Zone list page, in the zones table, locate the secondary zone for which you want to force propagation of zone changes. Then, from the zone's Actions menu, click Transfer zone now.

The Transfer zone now dialog opens and asks you to confirm this action.

  3. Click Force transfer.

After you initiate the zone transfer, the zone's Transfer zone now button is disabled for 15 minutes while the transfer is in progress.

📘

Forcing a zone transfer using the Transfer zone now button is also available from these locations in the user interface:

View zone transfer details

The Zone transfer status dialog displays zone transfer details. The dialog also lets you retry a zone-file transfer 15 minutes after the last transfer.

You can open the Zone transfer status dialog associated with a zone from the following locations in the user interface:

  • On the Zone list page, in the zones table, click the Actions menu for the zone and select View zone transfer status.

  • On the Zone list page, in the zones table, if a zone's Zone transfer column displays a status icon, click it.

  • On the Edit zone page, top toolbar, click Transfer status.

View zone history

Use the Zone history page to view information about a zone's active version and its change history.

  1. Log in to Control Center.

  2. Go to > DNS SOLUTIONS > Edge DNS. The Zone list page opens.

  3. In the Zone list, click the zone that you want history about.

    The Edit zone page opens.

  4. Click Zone history.

The Zone history page opens. Use this page to:

    • Compare an inactive version with the active version. From the inactive version's Actions menu, select Compare with active version.

    • Compare two versions. Select the checkboxes next to the versions that you want to compare and click Compare versions.

    • Activate a different version. From the Actions menu of the version that you want to activate, click Make version active. You must add a change comment and click Activate for the activation to start. The activation propagates immediately.

    • Primary zones only. Download the version in master file format. From the zone's Actions menu, select Download zone file.

View name server list

Akamai assigns the authoritative name servers for your Edge DNS contract. To retrieve the list, on the Zone list page, click Authoritative name servers.

Add these name servers to your zone data as NS records, and list them with the zone registrar.

Manage TSIG keys

Edge DNS supports Secret Key Transaction Authentication for DNS (TSIG) with BIND 9 and later. TSIG allows zone transfers only between systems that possess the shared secret key. Each TSIG key in the list is associated with, and can manage, one or more zones.

To retrieve the list of TSIG keys and manage them, click TSIG key list at the top of the Zone list page.

Download zone file for secondary zone

You can view the contents of a secondary zone by downloading the currently active zone file for this zone. The zone file contains the DNS database records for all DNS names within the secondary zone. The records contain the mapping between an IP address and a DNS name.

  1. Log in to Control Center.

  2. Go to > DNS SOLUTIONS > Edge DNS. The Zone list page opens.

  3. Complete one of these actions:

    • In the Zone column, select a secondary zone that had a successful zone transfer at some point in the past. Then, on the Edit zone page, click Download zone file.

    • Click the Actions menu associated with the secondary zone that had a successful zone transfer in the past and select Download zone file.

If you updated a zone file on a name server and the zone transfer either fails or is pending, Akamai is likely to have a version of the zone file that was transferred from a name server to Akamai in the past. You can download this version of the zone file.

If you select a secondary zone that has not had a successful zone transfer at some point, Download zone file is disabled.

Delete zones

You can delete one or multiple zones in bulk from the Zone list page.

  1. Log in to Control Center.

  2. Go to > DNS SOLUTIONS > Edge DNS. The Zone list page opens.

  3. In the Zone list section, select the checkbox next to the zones that you want to delete.

  4. From the Select zones action menu, click Delete.

The Delete zones dialog opens, prompting you to confirm that you'd like to delete the selected zones.

  5. To bypass safety checks before deleting the zones:

    1. Deselect Run safety checks.

The Bypass safety checks confirmation dialog opens.

    2. Click Yes.

The Bypass safety checks confirmation dialog closes.

    3. In the Delete zones dialog, a message appears alerting you to the risks of deleting zones without safety checks. Click Delete.

A status bar appears showing the deletion progress, followed by a Zone delete status page showing the result.
