Create and edit certificates
This section helps you to begin using CPS by showing you how to create a new certificate. You use the same process to edit your certificate. For more overview information about certificates, see CPS workflow.
When you create a certificate, you also generate a certificate signing request (CSR) using a private key that CPS generates. The CA then signs the certificate signing request with a signed certificate.
Depending on the validation type, there are four different types of certificates that you can create:
-
DV certificate. Uses domain validation to determine that a company has control of the domain.
-
OV certificate. Uses organization validation to determine whether or not a company is valid, if it is registered, and if the business contact legitimately works at the company. The CA uses your organization information to verify you legally own or have the legal right to use the domains listed in your certificate.
-
EV certificate. Uses extended validation to determine whether a company is valid and requires signed letters and notaries sent to the CA before signing.
-
Third-party certificate. Allows you to obtain a certificate from a CA of your choice. Certificates managed by CPS must be issued either by DigiCert or Let's Encrypt. If you want to use a different CA, you must create a third-party certificate. In this case, you use CPS to generate a certificate signing request, then you must submit the CSR to your CA yourself, and receive both the signed certificate and the trust chain back from the CA. After you obtain this information, you upload the signed certificate and trust chain to CPS.
