Segmented Media Delivery Mode

The Segmented Media Delivery Mode behavior is automatically added to your Default Rule for AMD properties. The behavior is required for AMD properties, and an error message is revealed if you delete it. If deleted, you need to re-add it before activating your configuration.

You can also include the behavior in a child rule to override what's set in the Default Rule. This lets you set different match criteria to apply the behavior for specific requests.

How it works

In addition to optimizing based on your selected media mode, this behavior also automatically adjusts the Time-to-Live (TTL) of your manifest for that mode. Once the TTL expires, Adaptive Media Delivery (AMD) checks your origin for an updated manifest. This helps to ensure the delivery of your most up-to-date content.

If you have additional caching rules set up, or behaviors in your property for your content, they take precedence. See Learn about caching for more details.

Additional options are available based on your selected media mode, and various caveats apply to their use. See the Adaptive Media Delivery documentation for more details.

Segmented media mode delivery type vs. the Segmented Media Delivery Mode behavior

When you set up a hostname from an AMD property, you select and configure a segmented media mode (VOD, LIVE, or EVENT). This is different than the Segmented Media Delivery Mode behavior in your rule configuration.

  • The segmented media mode delivery type. Configure this when setting up your hostname to determine the optimized edge map for delivering your selected media mode (VOD, LIVE, or EVENT). This only applies to requests that are directed to the edge hostname applied in that specific property hostname. For example, if you create another property hostname and don't apply the media delivery type, requests to its edge hostname won't be optimized to a specific edge map.

  • The Segmented Media Delivery Mode behavior. This behavior is in your Default Rule. Use it to apply other delivery-related optimizations for your selected mode. For example if you selected VOD as your media mode, you would set the Segmented Media Delivery Mode behavior to On demand. This matches the Mapping Solution setting to avoid a mismatch condition. Use the table below to choose the appropriate behavior mode option based on your selected use case.

Implementation

Set the Mode to optimize delivery based on your media format and selected media mode delivery type: On Demand, Live, or Event.

  • On Demand: Video on-demand content like pre-recorded media, movies, tv shows, or other evergreen content.
  • Live: Live, streaming event content like news, sports, or live broadcasts.
  • Event: Scheduled, online event content like product launches, webinars, or conferences.
