Default rule set

Every environment’s rule configuration starts with a default rule set that serves as the root container for your core traffic logic. Architecturally, this rule set is executed first by Akamai edge servers and applies globally to all incoming requests.

At the very top, the default rule set contains the pre-populated group of settings that are based on the specific Akamai product you selected during workspace creation. To edit that section, switch to the Settings tab.

To customize your environment's configuration:

  • Expand the default rule set. You can add more rules directly into the Default rule set container to apply standard, baseline logic across all requests.
  • Override defaults with lower rules. Because the rule configuration evaluates from the top down, any rules or custom rule sets placed lower in the rule tree structure take precedence. If a request matches both the default settings and a custom rule set below it, the more specific, lower rule overrides the baseline. See Rule configuration logic for more information.
