Nov 14, 2024 — Reintroduction of the Database service

On November 14, 2024, Akamai reintroduces the managed database service in partnership with Aiven to bring you higher performance, reliability, and flexibility. The new service is currently available in 20 core compute regions across the globe for distribution and low latency. Some of the key features of the new solution:

  • Vertical and horizontal scaling,
  • Observability insights (infrastructure metrics like CPU/DISK/Memory),
  • No Downtime upgrades,
  • The Suspend and Resume feature for database clusters,
  • 14-day backups and point in time recovery,
  • Improved performance, scalability, availability, and support.

Developer tools changes and limitations

Changes have been introduced in support of our new DBaaS product. If you use both legacy and new managed database products, you may notice that calls made directly to the API will result in different response data being returned. For example, if looking at the cluster data for two specific database instances, one using the old system and one using the new system, the response data for the call will be different between the two. This is intentional as we work to support the migration of databases from our old to the new system. Additionally, you can notice that some endpoints are not supported with the new database product and will be deprecated, for example the database backups endpoints.

If you have custom tooling based on the DBaaS API, you need to make considerations for these endpoint response changes.

Because of these changes, some functionality in our suite of Developer Tools (Linode CLI, the Linode Terraform Provider, SDKs, Ansible Collection, etc.) may not work as expected. We are working to resolve this issue.

Features targeted for 2025

Here are some of the features to be released in 2025:

  • VPC integration,
  • Ability to configure multiple read replicas,
  • Ability to configure basic database parameters,
  • Support for additional core compute regions,
  • Support for High Memory plans,
  • PCI DSS, SOC2, HIPAA, ISO compliance certification (fully compliant by Q1, 2026).
