Mar 8, 2023 — Akamai Zero Trust Client 5.1.0 Limited Availability (LA) Release
We are pleased to announce the release of the Akamai Zero Trust Client, the next generation of our cybersecurity and application access software. This release combines and will eventually replace both the Enterprise Application Access (EAA) and Secure Internet Access (SIA) (formerly known as Enterprise Threat Protector (ETP)) clients, bringing a unified and streamlined experience to both administrators and end-users. With the Zero Trust Client, you will benefit from a single installer, a unified user interface, and a single tray icon, making it easier to manage and see the status of your client. Barring the exceptions listed below, the user interface leverages the same concepts as the individual EAA and SIA clients, ensuring a seamless transition to the new client.
Zero Trust Client New Features
- Enable SIA functionality per EAA IdP - This new feature lets you enforce an extra level of security for a subset of your users, ensuring that sensitive information and assets are protected against unauthorized access. You can apply these extra security measures to devices owned by your organization, or to those owned by contractors, giving you the flexibility to tailor the security to your specific needs. It's enabled by default. To change this setting, go to Enterprise Center > Application Access or Threat Protection > Identity & Users > Identity Providers > IdP name > Client > Enable ETP Client.
- Zero Trust Client Auto-Upgrade - The Zero Trust Client brings forward the SIA Client's auto-upgrade capability. If you are currently using the EAA Client and convert to the Zero Trust Client, this new feature will simplify the process of upgrading your deployed Zero Trust Clients. With auto-upgrade enabled, you no longer need to coordinate with the desktop team to schedule client upgrades and can deploy them from Enterprise Center instead.
- Operating system (OS) notifications - The Zero Trust Client leverages OS notifications to convey important messages about the status of the client.
- Enterprise Center for Zero Trust Client - Manage Access and Threat Protection, deploy Zero Trust Client updates to your end-user machines and view your client inventory.
Zero Trust Client Features Targeted for Future Releases
- Internationalization and Localization – The Zero Trust Client is currently available in English.
- EAA Essentials Support – The Zero Trust Client doesn’t currently support EAA Essentials because EAA Essentials doesn’t offer device posture support.
- Ubuntu Linux Support – The Zero Trust Client currently supports macOS and Windows. Ubuntu support remains available through the EAA client.
- SIA Multi-Tenant Support – The EAA Client service within the Zero Trust Client uses only the primary tenant.
- EAA Outbound Proxy - The Zero Trust Client does not currently support outbound proxy. Outbound proxy support remains available through the existing EAA client.
Zero Trust Client Limitations and Caveats
- Both EAA and SIA must be on the same customer contract.
- The portal and IdP disagree on the default SIA client setting. The portal has it correctly enabled by default and the IdP has it disabled. The workaround is to change a setting in the IdP and redeploy in order to fix the problem with the SIA client setting. Then, undo the change you’ve just made and redeploy the IdP again to get back to the correct IdP settings.
- The Zero Trust Client leverages the device posture service and currently requires it to be enabled in the IdP (Enterprise Center > Application Access > Identity & Users > Identity Providers > IdP name > Client > Enable EAA Client > Enable Device Posture).
- In some instances, the client may remain running after exiting from the tray bar icon on macOS. The workaround is to left click the tray bar icon after exiting the client.
Important Note for Beta Testers
We would like to thank you for participating in the beta testing of the Zero Trust Client. As the release version of the client is now available, we would like to inform you that you need to uninstall the beta version of the client first and only then install the LA version of the client. OTA update from the beta version to the LA version is not available.
