Jun 10-14, 2024 — Web-based authentication flow enhancements

Akamai MFA will be rolling out updates to the web-based authentication flow starting June 10th and concluding June 14th. These changes aim to enhance both user experience and security.

Upcoming features and enhancements

Improved enrollment experience. Users will be able to instantly select their preferred device for enrollment, eliminating the need to navigate a series of dropdowns. This streamlined process reduces friction during the enrollment process, making it easier for users to get started with Akamai MFA.

Here are the key changes:

  • Enrolling the Akamai MFA application and phone number as a single device is no longer available. Instead, users may enroll the app and their phone number separately. Devices enrolled prior to this release remain unchanged.
  • To enroll a smartphone or tablet, click Akamai MFA on the Set up Multifactor Authentication screen. This enrollment flow lets you enroll an Android, iOS, or iPadOS device.
  • Previously, enrolling a smartphone enrolled both the Akamai MFA app and phone number. With this release, phone numbers are no longer part of the app enrollment process. To enroll a phone number separately, click Phone Number when selecting a device to enroll.

Resynchronize hardware OTP devices. Users will be able to resynchronize their hardware OTP devices if they experience clock drift or accidental counter increments. This feature ensures that these devices can continue to function securely and accurately, even in cases where minor issues may arise. For example, if a user enters a code that is not exact but is one of the next few codes in the token's sequence, they will be prompted to enter the next code from their device instead of receiving an error. If this subsequent code matches the expected value, Akamai MFA will calculate an adjustment to how the service verifies future codes for smoother authentication.

What to expect

Starting June 10th, you may notice user interface changes in the Akamai MFA web-based authentication flow. These updates will be rolled out gradually over the course of a week, and we expect minimal disruption to your normal workflow.
