# Get started

To configure this API for the first time:

1. Review [Get Started with APIs](https://techdocs.akamai.com/developer/docs/set-up-authentication-credentials) for details on how to set up client tokens to access any ​Akamai​ API. These tokens appear as custom hostnames that look like this:

```
  https://akzz-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.luna.akamaiapis.net
```

2. Make sure that Edge Hostnames is in your contract. You can find the list of products within your account in ​Control Center​ under Contracts. Contact your ​Akamai​ support team to enable Edge Hostnames if necessary.
3. You need different permissions to access API functions. You can manage these permissions in Control Center. Learn more about the [access control model](https://techdocs.akamai.com/iam/docs/about-access-control-model).
4. Before you can use this API, you need to [create authentication credentials](https://techdocs.akamai.com/developer/docs/set-up-authentication-credentials).
5. To enable this API, choose the API service named **Edge Hostnames API (HAPI)**, and set the access level to **READ-WRITE**.
